GNS3 – Graphical Network Simulator

GNS3 is a graphical network simulator that allows simulation of complex networks. It is an excellent complementary tool to real labs for Cisco and Juniper network engineers, administrators and people wanting to pass certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, CCIP, CCIE, JNCIA, JNCIS, JNCIE. This project is an open source, free program that may be used on multiple operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and MacOS X.

Cisco Networking Academy’s Cisco Packet Tracer with version 6.0.1 is a powerful network simulation program that allows students to experiment with network behavior and features. Cisco Packet Tracer provides powerful simulation, visualization, authoring, assessment, and collaboration capabilities, will helps teaching and learning of complex technology concepts. The Packet Tracer software is available free of charge to Networking Academy instructors, students, alumni, and administrators who are registered NetSpace users. You can download this software from Cisco but you need to register first in Cisco website or you can download from below links.

Latest Cisco packet tracer version is 6.0.1 launched in May 2013  for Cisco Network Academy with below new features.

Packet Tracer Version 6.0.1 New General Improvements: 

  • Supports current LTS version of Ubuntu and stopped support for Fedora

Packet Tracer Version 6.0.1 New IOS Improvements: 

The new Cisco ISR routers included in Packet Tracer 6.0.1 are delivered with IOS 15.1(4)M4 (C1900-UNIVERSALK9-M and C2900-UNIVERSALK9-M). This version is provided with the ipbase licence activated. The security and unified communications licences can be activated for a 60 grace period with the following CLI commands :

  • Security (Cisco 1941, Cisco 2901, Cisco 2911) : license boot module c2900 technology-package securityk9
  • Unified communications (Cisco 2901 and Cisco 2911 only) : license boot module c2900 technology-package uck9

Cisco Packet Tracer version 5.3.1 is a maintenance release that fixes functional and technical issues in previous versions. It replaces Packet Tracer version 5.3 and it supports activities authored in Packet Tracer 4.0, 4.1, 4.11, 5.0, 5.1, 5.2.x and 5.3. Please note that the last two courses of the CCNA Discovery and CCNA Exploration curricula require Packet Tracer version 4.11 at a minimum, CCNA Security requires version 5.2 at a minimum, and the beta Packet Tracer Skills Based Assessments require version 5.2.1 at a minimum. The curricula are fully compatible with Packet Tracer 5.3.1

Use Firefox to download the Linux.bin files as Internet Explorer doesn’t load them correctly. To install the Linux BIN packages, set the permission to be executable (chmod+x PacketTracer52_*.bin) then execute the binary in the terminal.

Boson NetSim Simulator

Boson offers three Cisco certification-focused products, NetSim for CCENT 7.0, NetSim for CCNA 7.0 and NetSim for CCNP 7.0.
