How to Configure a DHCP Client on Cisco Router WAN Interface for IP address

A Cisco Router WAN interfaces can be configured as a DHCP client to obtain an IP Address from DHCP server. It is especially useful on Ethernet interfaces that dynamically connect to an internet service provider (ISP) or you need to configure the Router to obtain its interface IP address automatically. Configure a DHCP Client on Cisco Router WAN  Interface To obtain an IP address on an interface using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) protocol, use the ip address dhcp command in interface configuration mode. To remove any address that was acquired, use the no form of this command. Cisco-Router(config)# interface fa0/0 Cisco-Router(config-if)#ip address dhcp Configure DHCP Client ID and Hostname for DHCPDISCOVER Messages Some service providers might ask you to use a client-id and/or a hostname of their own choice. The DHCPDISCOVER message has a specific hostname and client identifier that is the MAC address of the interface. For following configuration example, […]

How to configure DHCP option 60 on a Windows DHCP server for PXE booting

DHCP option 60 is not set on Windows 2003 server by default. If the OS deployment server is running on the same host as the DHCP server, you have to add this option and set its value to PXEClient in order to tell PXE clients where to find the OS deployment server. When you enabled PXE booting on a client computer, it listens to DHCP responses to find who the PXE server is that will be servicing that client computers. If a DHCP response contains option 60 with the value of “PXEClient,” the client computer will make further PXE requests to that specific computer. This option will need to be manually set on the DHCP server if: 1. The PXE server and DHCP server are on the same computer and, for some reason; the option was not automatically set during the PXE server installation. 2. If you need to set DHCP […]

How to Configure IP DHCP Server on Cisco Router/L3 Switch

Now we describe how to configure basic Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) on Cisco Router and switch. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is the protocol used by network devices (such as PCs, network printers, etc) to automatically obtain correct network parameters so they can access network and Internet resources such as IP Address, Default Gateway, Domain Name, DNS Servers and more. The above Network devices which are getting network parameters from DHCP server also called as DHCP clients. The Cisco IOS DHCP Server feature is a full DHCP server implementation that assigns and manages IP addresses from specified address pools within the router to DHCP clients. If the Cisco IOS DHCP Server cannot satisfy a DHCP request from its own database, it can forward the request to one or more secondary DHCP servers defined by the network administrator. A DHCP Server is most necessary in today’s networks. You usally found  Windows servers, routers and layer […]
