How to Install ActiveX Control in Internet Explorer 8/9/10 from Unknown Publisher

Change Internet Explorer 8/9/10 ActiveX Control settings

In case you are trying to install any ActiveX Control from unknown publisher from Internet Explorer in  Windows 8 / Windows 7/ Windows Vista/ XP, Internet Explorer might not be configured to download ActiveX controls for security reasons, or you might have declined to install the ActiveX control when Internet Explorer prompted you to download, install, or run the control. I experienced many with Digital Video Recorders (DVR) ActiveX controls. I have changed below settings in Internet Explorer and succeeded to install Active X control from unknown publisher.

Set your IP address/Website as Trusted site

  1. In Internet Explorer browser, click Tools in the upper toolbar or click on the Tools icon and select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab and select the Trusted Sites zone.
  3. Click the Sites button.
  4. Under “Add this Web site to the zone:” type your project web site.
  5. Click Add, then click OK.

Change your Security Settings in Internet Explorer

  1. In Internet Explorer browser, click Tools in the upper toolbar or click on the Tools icon and select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab and select the Trusted sites zone.
  3. Click the Custom Level button.
  4. Under ActiveX control and plug-ins check the following:
  • Allow Scriptlets set to Enable
  • Automatic Prompting for ActiveX controls set to Enable.
  • Binary and Script behaviors set to Enable
  • Download signed ActiveX controls set to enable or  Prompt
  • Download unsigned ActiveX controls set to enable or Prompt
  • Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe set to Disable
  • Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins set to Enable
  • Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting set to Enable
  • Click OK, and then click OK again

Change Advanced Options to Install ActiveX  Control from Unknown Publisher

If you have not succeeded in Vista or Windows 7  or Windows 8 to install an ActiveX Control component, change below Internet Explorer 8/9/10 settings and you will be able to install ActiveX Control.

  1. In Internet Explorer browser, click Tools in the upper toolbar or click on the Tools icon and select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab and go to the Security settings
  3. Select the ‘Allow software to run or install even if the signature invalid option ’(you will need to change it back when you are finished).
  4. Uncheck  ’check for signatures on downloaded programs’
  5. Click apply and OK.
